ReCore Review

ReCore feels like a game grappling with insecurity over its length. Clocking in at around eight hours, it’s a modest action game in which players, along with robotic companions called CoreBots, explore dungeons to find power-ups and progress through the story. It draws its inspirations from Metroid Prime and aspires to offer the same free-form adventuring, where items and abilities unlock fresh traversal options, and invite players to explore new opportunities in old areas. It also attempts to bake in the hyperactive lock-and-strafe combat of Prime, except from a third-person perspective. And for the most part, it succeeds.

Main character Joule has a rifle that can shoot red, yellow, blue, and white lasers that do more damage when they hit a matching enemy. There are other considerations such as bullet spray or a charge shot that staggers targets and breaks through shields. Since enemies come in big groups, crowd control is injected with some dynamism: you’re frequen…

Street Fighter 5 Review

Street Fighter V upholds the series’ legacy, offering a diverse cast of 16 characters that bring its great fighting engine to life. Combatants new and old alike vie for your attention with infectious personalities and unique fighting styles. Some of Street Fighter IV’s iconic mechanics have been retired in favor of new ones that add to the distinct qualities of each character, stripping away universal actions in favor of specialized skills. While I was wary of the relatively small roster at first, it’s clear that a lot of attention was put into making every character stand apart from the rest, including the veritable fighting game “brothers,” Ken and Ryu. Though the roster makes fighting with a friend at your side an exceptional thrill, cracks begin to show when you try to engage with the game by yourself.

There’s an immediately apparent lack of modes in Street Fighter V, some of which have been around since Street Fighter’s early years. There’s no Arcade mode, and n…

The studio stated it “will not be discussing any future game or TV show projects.”

The Switch OLED model will come in two color configurations: a white-and-black finish with a white dock (shown in the trailer), and a neon red/blue set with a black dock. The dock itself features a slightly different design but output in TV mode remains 1080p. All previous Joy-Con controllers will be compatible with the new unit, as Nin…

BetMGM being sued in New Jersey over faulty iGaming software allegations

In the United States and a punter is reportedly suing the BetMGM-branded iGaming enterprise over allegations that it covered up software glitches affecting play on its New Jersey-facing online casino and sportsbetting domains.

According to a Wednesday report from The Wall Street Journal newspaper, Sam Antar has filed the action in New Jersey Superior Court at the same time as claiming that he had been regularly disconnected from the operator’s locally-licensed sites while holding favorable hands in online games of blackjack. The plaintiff is purportedly alleging that the malfunctioning iGaming service also fuelled his compulsive gambling habit by refusing to release any winnings until he had deposited even more funds.

XCOM Director Jake Solomon Plans To Form A New Studio, First Game Likely Won't Be A Strategy Title

XCOM and Marvel’s Midnight Suns director Jake Solomon is planning to form a new studio, but don’t expect it to make strategy games like Firaxis did. Speaking on Simon Parkin’s My Perfect Console podcast this week (via VGC), Solomon said that he doesn’t feel like he has “anything more to say” when it comes to turn-based strategy and is instead excited by the prospect of working in a different genre.

“I found that I wasn’t that excited about doing another turn-based strategy game, not because the genre isn’t amazing–it’s where I’ve spent my life–but I felt like I didn’t have anything more to say in that area,” Solomon said. “So I started thinking, what would I do if I wasn’t making this? If I wasn’t making another turn-based strategy game at Firaxis? And I started to get excited. There are other things that excite me as a designer, and the idea of starting something new was really exciting to me.”

Zorua Is Coming To Pokemon Go Today–Here's How To Catch It

Over the past week, Pokemon Go has been teasing a Halloween-related event with found-footage style videos, which were suspiciously reminiscent of the trailer for Hisuian Zorua in Pokemon Legends: Arceus. As it turns out, Zorua is actually coming to Pokemon Go for the first time this Halloween–here’s how you can catch it.

The teasers posted by Pokemon Go included videos and screenshots with large numbers of Pokemon such as Noibat, Magikarp, and Pikachu spawning on the map, including references to Shuppet’s Spotlight Hour. Now, Niantic has revealed that Zorua is the Pokemon behind these mysterious spawns, which are related to the buddy Pokemon the Trainer has accompanying them.

New York lawmakers approve state budget accelerating NYC casino licensing

Working through the weekend, lawmakers in New York approved the state budget, accelerating the path for casinos in the New York city area. Lawmakers approved a minimum licensing fee of $500 million short of what the industry and some lawmakers expected. The deal also includes protections for the horse racing industry via support payments for Standardbred and Thoroughbred tracks in the state. Both breeds will also have access to support for purse accounts, breeding, and development funds.

Details of the Approval

The final budget came together on April 8 with lawmakers continuing to discuss options through April 9. Lawmakers decided to maintain financial support payments from video lottery terminal revenues for the racing industry. This was an important factor for racing, considering that the Yonkers and Aqueduct properties might obtain full casino licensing.

Genting Malaysia Assures Shareholders- Casinos to Remain Open Amid Strong RWG Performance

Genting Malaysia Berhad’s President and Chief Operating Officer (COO), Tan Kong Han, has reassured shareholders that the company’s casinos will continue operating, attributing this to the robust performance of its Resorts World Genting (RWG) business.

In a statement made during the company’s annual general meeting (AGM) on Wednesday, quoted by Asia Gaming Brief, Tan expressed his confidence that the government would not consider closing the casinos. This assurance is based on the continued growth and success of Genting Highlands, also known as Resorts World Genting (RWG), which remains Malaysia’s sole gaming operator.

Tan emphasized the company’s commitment to maintaining high standards of governance and responsible gaming practices. “The company has consistently adhered to the highest governance standards and conducted its gaming business responsibly. Over the years, we have operated in full compliance with government regula…

Armello studio League of Geeks is ‘going into hibernation for the foreseeable future’ and may not be back-

Just six months after laying off more than half its staff and pausing work on its current project, Armello and Solium Infernum developer League of Geeks has announced that the studio is going into “hibernation” for the foreseeable future, and may not return.

League of Geeks said in December 2023 that a confluence of factors including “rapidly rising operation costs, a weakening [Australian dollar], poor early access sales, and the unprecedented withdrawal of funding opportunities across the industry” had forced it to lay off more than 50% of its employees. The launch of the turn-based grand strategy game Solium Infernum, which came out in February 2024, was not impacted, but plans for a full release of League of Geeks’ next game, Jumplight Odyssey, were put on hold “indefinitely.”

The situation has clearly not improved since then, as League of Geeks co-founders Trent Kusters, Blake Mizzi, and Ty Carey “have made the decision to put LoG into hibernation for the foreseeabl…

6 years after becoming publicly playable, Escape from Tarkov is adding vaulting and fans are a lot more excited about it than I would’ve expected-

The multiplayer FPS Escape from Tarkov went into alpha testing in 2016, and moved into beta—which is still ongoing—a year later. And now, six years after that, developer Battlestate Games is working on a new feature that has the community a-tingle with excitement: vaulting.

Vaulting in videogames is simply the act of quickly clambering over low-lying obstacles in a videogame: A fence, a table, a gate, or whatever. So, y’know, vaulting over things. Hence the name. It enables players to get around objects quickly and maintain forward momentum even in cluttered areas, and importantly it also looks cool. It’s a common traversal method in games, but not universal: Some games support it and some do not.

Tarkov is one that does not, but that’s changing. In a livestream earlier today, Battlestate Games revealed that vaulting in Escape from Tarkov is now in playtesting and showed off some gameplay clips demonstrating the new move in action. There’s no indicat…

Cyberpunk 2077 ‘Update 2.0’ looks so big that you should probably just start a new game-

Cyberpunk 2077’s first and only expansion is out next month, but arguably the bigger deal is a larger “Update 2.0” coming along with it. CD Projekt Red has been talking about the ways it’s reworking the 2020 RPG’s skill trees, armor systems, and police AI since Summer Game Fest, but it was today’s Opening Night Live stream that gave us the first look at Update 2.0, as well as the new toys in the Phantom Liberty expansion, in action.

Probably the single biggest overhaul to Cyberpunk’s guts is the skill trees, which will have new perks to complement playstyles that take the place of the old minuscule percentage upgrades. We see a few of these in the trailer—a bullet-deflecting skill for katanas (a godsend if you previously tried to play a blades build), new executions for melee weapons, an air dash, a strength ability that lets you literally toss bodies, and a snazzy revolver skill that looks like Cassidy’s Deadeye ultimate.

Those new perks, which will be implemented…

Disney finally springs the mousetrap on Pixelborn, an impressive, fanmade, and unfortunately doomed digital client for TCG Lorcana-

Disney’s own-brand trading card game Lorcana has proved pretty popular among card enthusiasts—aside from being just a decent game, it also has that miraculous Disney brand recognition going for it, which makes those unexpected meta picks all the more hilarious when they wind up being someone like my guy Hiram Flaversham.

You also can’t play it online—at least not officially. Disney hasn’t come out with an official digital version of Lorcana yet, so anyone who wants to take the TCG for a whirl has to buy physical card packs. Enter Pixelborn, a free, fan-made digital edition of the game that debuted on the information highway last year.

Created by Pavel Kolev, the client is genuinely very impressive—it has a ranked ladder, matchmaking, and fully-animated battles. It also won’t be available for much longer, because Disney—entirely predictably—has asked Kolev to stop. Support for Pixelborn will end sometime prior to June 16.

“Earlier this …

After 28 years of service, Microsoft is killing WordPad-

Fresh from plunging a dagger into Cortana’s digital heart, Microsoft is sharpening another knife while staring at a photograph of a victim with the eyes cut out and a bunch of darts holding it to the wall. That victim is WordPad, the blameless text editor sitting between Notepad and Word—neither a fully lightweight feature-free box for writing a shopping list in, nor an entire word processor ecosystem.

For that sin WordPad has been sentenced first to deprecation and then deletion. In a note called Deprecated features for Windows client, Microsoft has announced, “WordPad is no longer being updated and will be removed in a future release of Windows. We recommend Microsoft Word for rich text documents like .doc and .rtf and Windows Notepad for plain text documents like .txt.”

Presumably everyone is actually just using Google Docs instead these days. I imagine the only reason Word is safe is because so many offices run on inertia and the thought of not using the same w…
