XCOM and Marvel’s Midnight Suns director Jake Solomon is planning to form a new studio, but don’t expect it to make strategy games like Firaxis did. Speaking on Simon Parkin’s My Perfect Console podcast this week (via VGC), Solomon said that he doesn’t feel like he has “anything more to say” when it comes to turn-based strategy and is instead excited by the prospect of working in a different genre.
“I found that I wasn’t that excited about doing another turn-based strategy game, not because the genre isn’t amazing–it’s where I’ve spent my life–but I felt like I didn’t have anything more to say in that area,” Solomon said. “So I started thinking, what would I do if I wasn’t making this? If I wasn’t making another turn-based strategy game at Firaxis? And I started to get excited. There are other things that excite me as a designer, and the idea of starting something new was really exciting to me.”

ReCore feels like a game grappling with insecurity over its length. Clocking in at around eight hours, it’s a modest action game in which players, along with robotic companions called CoreBots, explore dungeons to find power-ups and progress through the story. It draws its inspirations from Metroid Prime and aspires to offer the same free-form adventuring, where items and abilities unlock fresh traversal options, and invite players to explore new opportunities in old areas. It also attempts to bake in the hyperactive lock-and-strafe combat of Prime, except from a third-person perspective. And for the most part, it succeeds.
Main character Joule has a rifle that can shoot red, yellow, blue, and white lasers that do more damage when they hit a matching enemy. There are other considerations such as bullet spray or a charge shot that staggers targets and breaks through shields. Since enemies come in big groups, crowd control is injected with some dynamism: you’re frequen…
Street Fighter V upholds the series’ legacy, offering a diverse cast of 16 characters that bring its great fighting engine to life. Combatants new and old alike vie for your attention with infectious personalities and unique fighting styles. Some of Street Fighter IV’s iconic mechanics have been retired in favor of new ones that add to the distinct qualities of each character, stripping away universal actions in favor of specialized skills. While I was wary of the relatively small roster at first, it’s clear that a lot of attention was put into making every character stand apart from the rest, including the veritable fighting game “brothers,” Ken and Ryu. Though the roster makes fighting with a friend at your side an exceptional thrill, cracks begin to show when you try to engage with the game by yourself.
There’s an immediately apparent lack of modes in Street Fighter V, some of which have been around since Street Fighter’s early years. There’s no Arcade mode, and n…

The teasers posted by Pokemon Go included videos and screenshots with large numbers of Pokemon such as Noibat, Magikarp, and Pikachu spawning on the map, including references to Shuppet’s Spotlight Hour. Working through the weekend, lawmakers in New York approved the state budget, accelerating the path for casinos in the New York city area. Lawmakers approved a minimum licensing fee of $500 million short of what the industry and some lawmakers expected. The deal also includes protections for the horse racing industry via support payments for Standardbred and Thoroughbred tracks in the state. Both breeds will also have access to support for purse accounts, breeding, and development funds.
Details of the Approval
The final budget came together on April 8 with lawmakers continuing to discuss options through April 9. Lawmakers decided to maintain financial support payments from video lottery terminal revenues for the racing industry. This was an important factor for racing, considering that the Yonkers and Aqueduct properties might obtain full casino licensing.
Genting Malaysia Berhad’s President and Chief Operating Officer (COO), Tan Kong Han, has reassured shareholders that the company’s casinos will continue operating, attributing this to the robust performance of its Resorts World Genting (RWG) business.
In a statement made during the company’s annual general meeting (AGM) on Wednesday, quoted by Asia Gaming Brief, Tan expressed his confidence that the government would not consider closing the casinos. This assurance is based on the continued growth and success of Genting Highlands, also known as Resorts World Genting (RWG), which remains Malaysia’s sole gaming operator.
Tan emphasized the company’s commitment to maintaining high standards of governance and responsible gaming practices. “The company has consistently adhered to the highest governance standards and conducted its gaming business responsibly. Over the years, we have operated in full compliance with government regula…
