In 2010, a group of retired NFL players filed suit against against Electronic Arts, claiming that the company used their likenesses in its Madden NFL franchise without compensation. 

A panel of judges reviewed the case and today ruled that it can move forward — after EA tried to have it thrown out, the Associated Press reports. 

The company had attempted to defend its use of the players on First Amendment grounds, but the judges reviewing the case disagreed; Ninth Circuit judge Raymond C. Fisher wrote in the opinion that the First Amendment protects "incidental use," and EA's "use of the former players' likenesses was not incidental because it was central to Electronic Arts’s main commercial purpose: to create a realistic virtual simulation of football games involving current and former National Football League teams.&…

The popular survival game Rust suffered a setback this week when the game’s data center in Strasbourg, France caught on fire, bringing the servers down and wiping data. Producer Alistair McFarlane has spoken to PC Gamer about the situation and how the team was able to get the servers back up and running in short order.

McFarlane said when he woke up at 7 AM, his phone was already overrun with messages about the fire that took place overnight. McFarlane said he didn’t imagine it would be such a bad situation because “data centers these days are built to high standards with advanced fire suppression systems.” Even so, the fire ripped through the data center and crashed Rust’s EU servers.

Thankfully, no one was injured, but it took hours for firefighters to put out the blaze.

A former gaming executive has been sentenced to death in China for poisoning the founder of Chinese gaming company Yoozoo Games. This story also connects to the recently released Netflix series 3 Body Problem from the creators of Game of Thrones.

CBS News reports that Xu Yao poisoned Yoozoo founder Lin Qi in December 2020 over a business dispute. Lin’s tea was poisoned, according to The Hollywood Reporter, and he died 10 days later at the age of 39. Xu was taken into custody not long after Lin’s death.

A court said multiple other people at Yoozoo were sickened but survived after Xu poisioned drinks in the company’s office over reported disputes.
